If you’ve ever sat in front of a blazing open fire after coming in from the cold on a winters day and felt the warmth seep into your bones while you’ve toasted to a tingling rosy glow, then you’ll understand the sort of warm welcome that’s waiting for the customers of Dunes and Tunes. This is the name of an Irish bar that I came across by chance, on the beach front in Playa del Ingles in Gran Canaria.

Halfway into a `walking off the dinner´ evening stroll, and contemplating on maybe finding somewhere with a Spanish atmosphere for the remaining hours of the evening, something unexpected happened to interrupt the process of digestion.

The promenade was awash with people dancing; completely blocking the pathway and putting an abrupt end to the leisurely walk. The couples, clinging to each other and whirling around like mad things were dancing the way people used to dance when life was fun and it wasn’t out of fashion to be seen enjoying yourself.

Celtic Touch in the Canary Islands

All of this was happening in front of Dunes and Tunes; an apparent touch of the Celtic transported to the Canary Islands.

The happy atmosphere swirled and eddied from inside like an Irish mist; surrounding me in its hospitable embrace and pulling me in through the door.

Archie Meany from County Clare

The singer; Archie Meany, a native of county Clare in Ireland, was in full flow with `Is this the way to Amarillo´ which is admittedly not your authentic Celtic but it had the evening’s crowd on their feet. Archie then carried on with the more typically traditional music that had even the international guests tapping their feet and slapping the table tops in rhythm to The Wild Rover.

Inside Dunes and Tunes the décor is all gleaming polished wood and the friendly staff, under the managing hand of Rory, attended to the orders at the prow shaped bar. Paul and Jorgen carried the drinks to the tables balanced on big silver trays that they held high over the heads of the well contented clientele, and not a drop of good Irish ale was spilt; it appeared to be an all together well run ship.

John Fahy from Galway

In the late evening; John Fahy the bar’s owner who originates from the shores of Galway, rocked the classics like Bon Jovi, Dr Hook and The Eagles as well as adding his own special touch to the traditional Irish tunes that were constantly being requested. John finished with some excellently rendered popular ballads that were a pleasure to sit and listen to, and that rounded the night off on a perfectly harmonious note.

It was a spur of the moment evening that turned out to be an authentic Irish `crack´. So never mind the horse chestnuts, marshmallows or the crumpets as the toasting in front of the fire can wait until another night.

Just pour me another pint of Guinness!
