Gran Canaria’s Beaches

From the Biggest Beach in Maspalomas to the sheltered cove of Amadores

Las Canteras Beach in Las Palmas,

Las Palmas, the capital city, was the first to attract British visitors to Gran Canaria and initiated the start of the islands holiday trade.

Most visitors now prefer to stay in the specialised resorts that have developed in the south of the island and that have been designed to cater for every possible need.

Maspalomas and Meloneras are perhaps the most luxurious with a phenomenal variety of top class hotels to choose from. This extensive stretch of beach on Gran Canaria, a full six kilometres in length, guarantees that there is always room to spread your towel and that the sands never seems overcrowded.

The famous landmarks of the Maspalomas Dunes and the Natural Oasis lie between the spread of luxury hotels and apartments and add an amazing desert-like feel to the arid local landscape.

Due in part to Gran Canaria’s volcanic origins, the multiple small valleys cut by the lava flow during the islands formation has restricted the outward growth of resorts on the south western corner of the island. Puerto Rico and Puerto de Mogán are two very popular family resorts, ideal if you enjoy boat cruises and water sports on your holiday, as both have excellent marinas. They also have small contained beaches that offer particularly safe bathing for families with young children. The main choice of accommodation in both is concentrated on self catering apartments so they are an ideal base for those looking for a budget holiday in the Canaries.

Playa de Amadores has grown in popularity in the last five years, a new development from a previously completely barren cove; it now boasts a beautiful curve of pristine white sand backed by some very attractive apartments and the newly opened four star Hotel Dunas Amadores.
