AGÜIMES... Saints and Scented Streets

Cuadro de texto: Social Centre in The Square
The Plaza del Rosario; the large square in front of the church, is a popular afternoon meeting place for the locals where they sit and chatter away the hours.
A point of great social importance it also hosts the countless open air celebrations that are held in the town.
On Saint’s days the virgin statues are brought down from their high shelved resting places to be decorated and paraded through the streets.
The Three King’s day, a Christmas celebration in January, a castle and stage are built, and the majestic giving of gifts is made to the children from the backs of well-groomed camels. Lets not forget the week long, day and night, biggest outdoor party of all; carnival.
One of the most important on the yearly calendar of events is the major dramatic act produced at Easter, when a crucifixion is actually staged in the square after a lengthy pageant through the streets.
Cuadro de texto: Museum in Plaza San Anton
In the smaller Plaza de San Anton there is a museum that houses just a few of the relics, including a Guanche’s mummified, remains that have been unearthed in the area.
Also in this delightful square there is a small and very rustic tapas bar whose tables spread out onto the nearby pavements.
A drink and a small snack here will give you a true taste of life in a rural Canarian town without damaging your pocket.
As you enjoy a quiet stroll around these hushed streets you need have no fear of losing your way, as a local saying goes: - In Agüimes it doesn’t matter which street you take as you will always end up in the same place!
Cuadro de texto: Colourful Paved Streets
This ancient settlement is emblematic to the island of Gran Canaria for its great historic value and numerous archaeological sites.
The neo-classical church of San Sebastian is the central and most dominant feature at the core of this ancient urbanization.
San Sebastian’s white domed bell-tower looms high above the rooftops of the balconied houses that lay in architectural harmony along the labyrinth of paved streets winding from the shady treed square.
At six o’clock the church bells chime, reverberating across the local community to call the devoted to prayer.
