SUNSPOTS: Las Canteras Las Canteras Beach in Las Palmas Las Canteras beach in Las Palmas, the capital city of Gran Canaria, was once used as the film set for the famous Gregory Peck film, Moby Dick. The city, situated high up on the north-east coast of the island, is blessed with an amazing three and a half kilometres of beautiful sand. A British Holiday Industry The city was the first holiday resort to attract visitors in quantity to the island back in the 1940’s, but has diminished in popularity over the years as other areas in sunnier more southern spots have developed. The holiday industry was established by British immigrant workers who were employed in the port areas, and slowly developed after the end of the Second World War into something similar to the modern day package deals only with arrival mainly by ship. Hotel Construction Began in the 1960’s Eventually in the 1960’s the Canarian people realised the importance of the tourist trade to the island’s commerce and began to construct hotels bordering the beach front. The Hotel Reina Isabel was one of the most important during this time and now, newly renovated, has begun to recapture part of the old trade. Las Palmas: More than the Beach If it’s more than a beach holiday you have in mind then Las Palmas is ideal, as it is a wonderful city for exploring and for combining days on the sand with sightseeing tours. There are many museums to visit; the exciting Science Museum in Parque Santa Catalina is a popular choice with its many interactive, hands on exhibits. The Casa de Colon pays homage to Christopher Columbus and his brief stay in the Canaries. For those who enjoy displays of a nautical theme then the model ships and log books are fascinating. The museum is close to the Cathedral of Santa Ana in Veguetta which is part of the old quarter and full of fascinating architecture so it’s easy to visit both during the same morning. City Shopping For shopping Triana’s pedestrianised streets are a marvel of intermingling alleys and wide boulevards alive with street musicians and lottery ticket sellers. With everything available from designer boutiques to shoeshine boys, something that many holidaymakers who stay in the south of the island truly miss. |
