Places to Visit and Shopping in Gran Canaria History and Museums Gran Canaria has a varied history and exhibits this with an excellent selection of museums, mostly found in Las Palmas, displaying many different types of relics and remains. Among the most popular to visit are the exciting Science Museum in Parque Santa Catalina, with its numerous interactive, hands on exhibits it’s a favourite with small children. Parque Santa Catalina is a wonderful old Spanish style plaza bursting with life and atmosphere, and within a few minutes walking distance to one of the city’s best shopping areas where you will find the largest department store on the island, El Corte Ingles and also to the newer shopping centre El Muélle that overlooks the port.
The Casa de Colon pays homage to the exploring voyager Christopher Columbus and commemorates his brief stay in the Canaries. For those who enjoy displays of a nautical theme then the model ships and log books are fascinating. The museum is close to the Cathedral of Santa Ana in Veguetta which is part of the old quarter and full of fascinating architecture so it’s easy to visit both during the same morning and add a spot of shopping in the beautiful wide boulevard of Triana, Las Palmas’s best pedestrianised shopping zone.
Touring and Sightseeing in Gran Canaria Gran Canaria is a landscape of contrasts, from the barren beaches in the south to the verdant pine forests in the north. The central area; where the subsistence is mostly based on agriculture, is a splendid place to explore, with many small hidden Canarian villages that will surprise you along the way. Fataga and San Bartolome de Tirajana are just two examples of typical Canarian villages that really shouldn’t be missed if you are out driving. The most famous landmark on the island is the splendid rock formation called Roque Nublo, situated in the highest central part of the island it is the most easily recognised of all the Canarian emblems and will add a majestic touch to you holiday snapshots. |
